COUNTRY CLASSIFICATION
COUNTRIES AND TERRITORIES
The term "economies", as used in this data center, describes regions, countries and territories. Country-level data are included where statistics have been reported or where it was possible to make an estimate. In case of change in the statistical coverage of a country, it is identified by adding an end year after the country name. Countries validity periods as well as special statistical coverages used in UNCTADstat are detailed below.Countries and territories are grouped by economic criteria or membership of trade agreements for the purposes of statistical analysis and research.
GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS
There is no established convention for the designation of "developed" and "developing" countries or areas in the United Nations system. This section includes countries and territories classified according to three categories of development: developing economies, transition economies and developed economies. Each category is further divided by geographical region. The exact composition of each region is detailed below.World' total represents the sum of the figures of the three above-mentioned groups plus the figures of a group of territories and partners not elsewhere classified, whose composition is detailed below. Data of these territories are included in the world total if they have been reported but are not presented individually or in any group, either geographical, economic or trade.
- Development status groupings and composition
- Geographical groupings and composition
- "Other territories" grouping composition
Data were collected and checked to ensure that they matched the geographical coverage of the countries. However, some gaps could not be avoided due to data unavailability and are described in the table notes.
ECONOMIC GROUPINGS
UNCTADstat provides numerous and varied groupings of countries and territories in order to provide easy access to the statistics necessary for socio-economic analysis and development research.ECONOMIES BY TRADE, MONETARY GROUPS AND INTERREGIONAL GROUPING
Statistics on trade and monetary groups are presented where relevant and of special analytical interest. These groups, which are not limited to developing countries, are classified by geographical region, with the exception of some interregional groupings.
PRODUCT CLASSIFICATION
STANDARD INTERNATIONAL TRADE CLASSIFICATION (SITC) REVISION 3
The Standard International Trade Classification which is a statistical classification of the commodities entering external trade. The current international standard is the SITC, Revision 3."UNCTAD product groups" are provided for special analytical interest.
The definition of "Manufactured goods by degree of manufacturing" is taken from Trade and Development Report (TDR) 2002 Annexes to Chapter III. - Manufactured goods by degree of manufacturing (SITC Rev. 3)

CREATIVE PRODUCTS
Given the complexity of making clear distinctions and defining the borderline between a creative good that is exclusive and mass production, between handmade and machine-made, between decorative and functional, etc., this exercise of compiling statistics for creative goods includes all the creative goods with the above characteristics since they fall under the criteria of the UNCTAD classification of "the cycle of creation, production and distribution of a tangible product with creative content, economic and cultural value and a market objective".- Creative product groupings and composition (HS 2002)
- Creative product groupings and composition (HS 2007)
